The interior design project of Sentosa house sought to balance materiality and proportions on an existing house by intervening surgically in each corner.
With special and cautelous attention to details, Studio MK27 reframed volumes and atmospheres by adjusting alignments, opening walls, lowering ceiling-heights, eliminating staircases and extending surfaces from the inside to the outside.
A minimal window frame, with large glass panes, was applied into all openings. In the living room, these windows reach 6 meter height of glass, creating an open and poetic dialogue between the internal spaces and the landscaping. In the inner patio, a pocket bamboo forest filters the sunlight.
In between the two sides of glass, a double-height walnut wood bookcase stands majestically on the living room. A thin grafite-colored metallic ladder slides along the shelves that hold a variety of books and objects.
The walnut wood also envelopes all internal walls, giving warmth to the spaces, while the ceilings also have wooden slats finishing. As for the flooring, it was all made in Basaltine stone, strengthening the continuity between spaces.
This darker shades palette is punctuated by brighter elements as tapestry, fabrics and furniture as well as by the discrete lighting project.
As usual in Studio MK27 projects, the decoration is a mixture of contemporary and vintage pieces. It includes great mid-century designers as George Nakashima – who designed a costume made bench for this house – Vladimir Kagan, Ib Kofod, Finn Julhl, Ico Parigi and Noguchi… As well as current pieces designed by Dordoni, Paola Lenti and Piero Lissoni. The rugs, by German brand Jan Kath, are customized for each room.
The living spaces and circulation also shelter some special pieces and works of art, as the 3 chandeliers by Carlo Scarpa for Venini hanging over the main staircase, the golden sculpture by Brazilian artist Artur Lescher and the large photograph by Cássio Vasconcellos as a scenarium for the dining room.
The external areas, designed in collaboration with Vladmir Djurovic studio, includes a stone deck covered lounge where Studio’s MK27 design for Minotti, Quadrado sofa and coffee table, overlooks the Palissandro marble swimming pool.
