The Canggu Beach Club is located on the south coast of Bali Island, Indonesia. The Canggu Beach region is currently experiencing a transformation process, with several new private houses and developments arising among the original rice fields. The exuberant nature resists, attracting tourists from all over the world. Some of them liked the place so much, particularly because of the perfect waves, that they decided to stay. The site’s irregular shape generously faces the seashore and Canggu River.
The client wants to build a Beach Club and a Hotel. His desire is that guests should have a “vintage” beach experience, like he had during his early days in Bali. Following long discussions and countless drawings, in a very collaborative process with the client, the program was divided into public, semi-public and private areas. A large public sidewalk and a garden with sun tanning areas were created by the existing breakwater, connecting the shore to the Beach Club. The idea is to foster a welcoming environment that ensures free access to locals as well as gests and tourists.
An infinite pool wall defines the semi-public area. The semi-public area is basically the Beach Club itself: with two bars, one restaurant, a shop, lounge areas and a spa. The Hotel area is to be private and will hold up to 150 rooms. Back of house, technical areas, car parking, drop off areas and offices also had to be provided within the site limits, and are located at the lower level.
The main project premise was to blend the building into the landscape, considering the particular geometry of the site. The solution was found in a sinuous marquise that spans throughout the entire site, woven among the trees.
This continuous canopy has a variety of uses. It is shaped to create a square at the Beach Club, where people contemplate not only the view of the shore (throughout the infinite pool), but each other, generating a lively social atmosphere. Food, drinks, music, concerts and sports gear rentals will all take place in the piazza, while the marquise continues its way to the Hotel area, randomly wrapping around itself, to create inside patios that ensure views for every room.
The rooms, defined by bamboo panels and brise-soleils, are spread underneath the concrete slab of the marquise like a Villa. There are no closed corridors. Separated by a delicate plant barrier, every room has its exclusive terrace and view: either to the shore, to the river or to the inside patios. There are two car entrances, one leads exclusively to the Beach Club by the shore, and the other is only for hotel guests, at the back of the site, where the hotel reception is located. The hotel reception can be better described as a lounge. It lies by an affluent river, creating an intimate mood. An opening in the Beach Club floor brings light down to the lower level, where a patio is located. This courtyard defines a circulation hub, giving access to the bathroom facilities, shop, spa reception, gym and an event hall. Filtered through the ladder, this entire area opens up to the riverside.
Having these facilities concentrated on the lower level, made it possible to leave only the core uses on the beach club ground floor, like the restaurant and the bars.
In order to reduce the visual impact on the beach, the marquise is one story high by the shore and gradually increases to three stories as it moves towards the back. All slabs have the same projection, and the impact on the beach is very low.
The building overall is a set of concrete slabs with loose bamboo boxes and open spaces in between. It blends into the trees and you cannot tell where it starts and where it ends. It works as a protection from the rain and sun, the rest it is up to whatever else your heart may desire.
